Nowadays we’re all so used to the Union Terminal half-dome being so much taller than the ramps flanking the center, we sometimes forget just how large the ‘wings’ are…. Not in this photo.
The sides of the building are purposely lower than the main part of the Rotunda – the ramp system was designed to accommodate different types of vehicles driving through on pick-ups and drop-offs. There was a ramp for private cars and taxis, and a separate one for buses. A third ramp was designed (and mostly outfitted) for streetcars, but was never used for that purpose, since Cincinnati is still working on its downtown streetcar project today!
