What Time Is It?

Cincinnati Union Terminal's facade clock

Cincinnati Union Terminal boasts many great architectural features – and the clock on the façade is no exception. It’s large enough that it can be seen from I-75 today. Back in the day, we’re sure travelers who were running late could also watch the clock all the way up the agonizingly long approach to the station.

One of the features built in to Union Terminal was the synchronized/computerized clock system. Was the façade clock looped in with the rest of them? Hit us back with a comment – we’d love to know.

I do know that the ‘digital’ clocks above the arrival and departure boards (part way back toward the concourse were tied to a common clock, and probably at least to the ones above the magazine stand (now the info booth centered under the dome)…when it was quiet you could hear the mechanisms clunking and thudding in there well into the ’80s. I thought I’d heard or read that all these were slaved together, including the giant clock out front to make it easier to adjust everything at once. I’ve seen photos of a group of master clocks somewhere on the lower levels as well.
